Hardi Kurda featured in “Hörspielmagazin” https://radioart-residency.net/en/hardi-kurda-wird-im-hoerspielmagazin-vorgestellt/ Thu, 30 Jul 2020 08:13:59 +0000 https://radioart-residency.net/?p=2016

Hardi Kurda and his radio project “Listening’s Urgency” have been featured in the “Hörspielmagazin” on Deutschlandfunk.

The Kurdish composer and musician Hardi Kurda discovers the radio as an instrument that challenges our listening and questions the social order. Oscillating freely between the frequencies, he poses the question of illegality and its consequences for people and society.

Shift.fm — the Remote Radio is a temporary radio programme of the Bauhaus University Weimar, in which students undertake an attempt to examine the present from the future’s perspective. Everything Illegal — Live Radio Performance https://radioart-residency.net/en/everything-illegal-live-radio-performance/ Thu, 28 May 2020 09:50:32 +0000 https://radioart-residency.net/?p=1949 In his radio project Listening’s Urgency Hardi Kurda questions the legitimacy of the legal and the construction of illegality:

Illegality is awareness of a movement which doesn’t have a voice, which is not recognized, which is not normal. Illegality provocates and askes for something to change.

For the final performance as part of the Radio Art Residency, Kurda meets the soprano and voice performer Nina Guo for a telepathic live radio performance that invites listeners to follow them into the fringe areas of social order. What emerges is a radiophonic narration that draws on personal experiences from these marginal areas. It is based on conversations with the cellist Khabat Abas, the performance artist Sherko Abbas and a former smuggler, who have shared their stories with us, as well as on Kurdas own story.

Sunday, June 7, 8 pm
on Radio CORAX 95.9 Mhz in Halle
and via live-stream on RADIOCORAX.DE
as well as on reboot.fm / 88.4 MHz in Berlin

The live radio performance will be relayed by the radio festival Latitude on Air: Unsettling Power Relations.

„Listening’s Urgency“ – Live Radio Performance https://radioart-residency.net/en/zuhoeren-in-zeiten-der-krise-live-radio-performance/ Sat, 18 Apr 2020 09:41:32 +0000 https://radioart-residency.net/?p=1920 In times of contact restrictions the radio is all the more an instrument to bridge the isolation. What role does listening play in times of crisis? In his project “Listening’s Urgency” the composer and sound artist Hardi Kurda, current stipendiary of the Radio Art Residency, explores this question.

In this, Kurda is searching for the in-between sounds of the medium and the gaps in the social order: Do we overstep the borders of legality by listening? What does illegality mean? Can illegality make noise? Is noise illegal?
A live radio ensemble of musicians, artists and writers from different parts of the world pursue these questions in Kurdas piece. The radio listeners are invited to follow them and to reflect their own listening.

In the course of the performance we invite you to share your listening impressions via chat.

Radio Art Residency in concert https://radioart-residency.net/en/en-radio-art-residency-in-concert-andre-damiao-hardi-kurda/ Fri, 06 Mar 2020 15:02:20 +0000 https://radioart-residency.net/?p=1872 …Would have been nice, but had to be cancelled due to the corona pandemic…

On Friday, March 20, two guest artists of the Radio Art Residency meet for a concert night at Salon Villa Plagwitz in Leipzig.

André Damião II Narva 2

André Damião works between the fields of music and electronic arts and experiments with self-built mobile devices as means for itinerant sound art production. In 2019 he was the third artist-in-residence at Radio CORAX in Halle.

NARVA 2 Damião’s audio-visual instrument is part of a series of mobile music objects. Named after the GDR light bulb manufacturer, the hacked portable tv represents the genealogy of the portable means and its relation with programmed obsolescence, the means of production and their effects in daily life.

HARDI KURDA II Radiola Springs

Hardi Kurda is a composer, sound artist and improviser. His work reflects the listening in the time of crisis. In his performances and compositions he uses the radio as an instrument to explore the tonal material of the frequency band. Until May Kurda is guest artist at the Radio Art Residency in Halle.

RADIOLA SPRINGS Kurda’s prepared viola will have its first performance.

Listening’s Urgency: Hardi Kurda is the 5th Artist in Residence https://radioart-residency.net/en/die-dringlichkeit-des-zuhoerens-hardi-kurda-ist-5-stipendiat-der-radio-art-residency/ Thu, 13 Feb 2020 09:11:21 +0000 https://radioart-residency.net/?p=1793 Composer and sound artist Hardi Kurda is the fifth recipient of the Radio Art Residency scholarship. Kurda studied music in Slemani, Kurdistan Region, Iraq and composition in Leipzig, Germany and Gothenburg, Sweden. In his performances and compositions he uses the radio as an instrument to explore the frequency spectrum as tonal material.

I was always looking for a way to make music and feel free at doing so — in the sense that I didn’t want to impose a preconceived idea on time, the exploration of space, or the perception of the environment. And I found this freedom in radio, in the frequencies that are free to be listened to and used.

Kurda will further explore the freedom in the frequency’s intermediary tones during his three-month residency at Radio CORAX. Under the title Listening’s Urgency he aims to develop a radio practice that will be continued in Kurdistan-Iraq, where he grew up and founded a festival for sound art and experimental music in 2017, bringing artistic sound practices into the public sphere. For the opening of his residency, Hardi Kurda invites listeners to participate in an interactive radio performance:

Through interaction, the visitors should find or change different frequencies through interaction. It is important to me that they listen actively, interact with each other and make decisions. Because that’s what radio does for me: it brings people into contact.

How is madness embodied and embedded in public space? For the artist, the simultaneous seclusion and exteriority of urban gardens are a metaphor for what we call madness.

On Saturday, November 23rd, at 6.30 pm, the space will be opened with a live radio perforamance. Plant lovers are invited to bring their favourite, beautiful, singular green flatmates and let them be part of the installed garden.

Bring us your plant https://radioart-residency.net/en/bring-uns-dein-pflanzentier/ Fri, 15 Nov 2019 09:21:00 +0000 https://radioart-residency.net/?p=1521

I invite you to create an imaginary garden with me
It is a space for plants to talk,
And for us to talk with them.
I once loved a plant with all my heart,
It was a cactus plant.
It was hard every time I was sad, and there was difficulty every time I was happy.
It was torn from my heart, then my heart exploded.

From November 23rd to November 30th, Sara Hamdy, artist in residence at Radio CORAX, turns the gallery Blech, Raum für Kunst Halle, into a garden and radio space.

For this event, plant lovers are invited to contribute their favorite plants to the installation and let it be part of the imaginary garden for the time of the exhibition. All plants will be very well taken care of.

On Saturday, November 23rd, the space will be opened with a live radio performance, for which we invite all plant contributers and participants to wander through the garden.

Bring us your special plant:
We open the doors for your contribution at Blech, Raum für Kunst Halle e.V., Am Steintor 19
from Nov 15th – Nov 22nd, daily from 3 pm–5 pm

& from Nov 24th – Nov 29th, daily from 5 pm–8 pm

Opening: On Saturday, November 23rd, at 6.30 pm:

with a live radio performance, for which we invite all plant contributers and participants to wander through the garden.

The garden and radio installation is part of Sara Hamdy’s long-term project Margins for Madness: Undesirable Monuments, an ongoing research looking at the ways in which madness and unreason are socially constructed. How is madness embodied and embedded in public space? The simultaneous seclusion and exteriority of urban gardens and rural woods are a metaphor for madness.
